COVENTRY ROAD.
SLICE OF MOROCCO .
At Lighting of London, we focus on creating lighting schemes that support the way people use and experience a space. Project Coventry demonstrates how carefully selected lighting can enhance a compact courtyard garden and extend its use into the evening.
THE BRIEF .
This Brighton courtyard garden was designed with a strong Moroccan influence, using colour, texture and planting to create a private outdoor retreat. The space includes two distinct areas: a dining zone within the side return and a lounge area in the main garden.
The lighting needed to support both areas, provide a comfortable evening atmosphere and highlight key features without overwhelming the garden.
Our Approach .
We delivered a layered lighting scheme that works with the landscape design rather than competing with it. Instead of simply illuminating the garden, the objective was to reveal its personality.
The layered planting, decorative Moroccan features feature, and architectural screening all offered opportunities for visual interest after sunset. Through carefully considered fixture selection and positioning, we created depth, contrast and atmosphere while maintaining a comfortable and welcoming environment. The fixtures were positioned to remain discreet during the day while providing effective illumination in the evening, creating an immersive experience.
The Products .
The Spot.M was implemented to provide general highlighting, focusing on lighting the various foliage. The compact size allowed it to be placed within the planting, without causing visual clutter.
The Spot.S was used for pinpoint lighting, for a dramatic contrast effect. The small size allowed it to be mounted and illuminate the architectural features.
The Tilt.M was used to light the showstopper of the garden - the green marble water feature. The tilted light allowed precise aiming, ensuring focal features were highlighted while avoiding unnecessary spill light.
Small but mighty, the Beam.S was an integral part of creating a layered lighting scheme. Placed against the brick backdrop, the Beam.S emphasised the texture of the wall, adding depth and intrigue to the garden
Our Impact .
The OUTCOME .
The completed lighting scheme supports the garden’s function as both a social and private space. By highlighting planting, materials and key features, the lighting adds depth and usability while remaining understated.
Project Coventry shows how thoughtful fixture selection and placement can add value to a landscape project, helping the space work effectively throughout the day and into the evening.
