PINE COTTAGE.
Enchanting Evenings .
This residential scheme required a lighting approach that allowed the exterior of the property to be as considered as the interior. We believe exterior lighting should enhance a property’s architecture and landscape while remaining sensitive to its surroundings. This project demonstrates how a carefully considered lighting scheme can improve the usability and appearance of outdoor spaces while supporting Dark Skies principles.
THE BRIEF .
The objective was to create an exterior lighting scheme that complemented the quality and character of the home, extending the atmosphere of the interior into the surrounding garden.
The lighting needed to highlight key landscape features, create depth throughout the space and provide a warm, welcoming environment after dark. Environmental responsibility was also an important consideration, with the scheme designed to align with UK Dark Skies guidance by minimising unnecessary light spill and focusing illumination only where it was needed.
Our Approach .
The lighting design focused on subtle layers of light that enhance the landscape without overwhelming it. Warm 2700K light sources were selected to create a comfortable evening environment while supporting the overall design objectives of the project.
Rather than flooding the garden with light, the scheme uses carefully positioned fixtures to draw attention to planting, trees and decorative features. This approach creates visual interest and depth while maintaining a balanced and understated appearance.
Alongside the lighting design, a Rako control system was incorporated, allowing the homeowners to easily adjust and manage the lighting scenes through the Rako app.
The Products .
The Moon was the primary fitting used throughout this design. By sporadically placing the Moon with its soft downward illumination, the provided dappled lighting effect created a more visually engaging scene. Its gentle distribution of light helps define the landscape while maintaining a natural appearance after dark.
The Spot.Z with its zoomable feature was the perfect fitting to provide illumination up the tall trees situated around the space. By placing them at the base of the tree, the light could be adjusted exactly, whether the client provided a more full wash of light, or a more dramatic pinpoint lighting effect.
Where some more light was needed for the walkways to maintain functionality, the Mark was incorporated. The Mark is designed to bring a striking ground wash effect, enhancing the aesthetic and making the space useable in darker hours without overpowering the space.
Our Impact .
Lighting of London managed the installation process through our in-house team, ensuring the design intent was carried through to completion.
Particular attention was given to infrastructure and cable routing during installation. By planning for potential future landscaping changes, the system remains adaptable without requiring significant alterations to the lighting installation. This forward-thinking approach helps protect the long-term value of the project while maintaining the integrity of the design.
The combination of carefully selected fittings, considered positioning and integrated controls allowed us to create a scheme that is both functional and visually effective.
The OUTCOME .
The completed lighting scheme enhances the garden’s character and extends the enjoyment of the outdoor space well into the evening. Trees, planting and decorative features are highlighted with precision, creating depth and visual interest while maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful lighting design, quality products and careful installation can transform a garden into an integral part of the home, while remaining sensitive to both the landscape and the wider environment.
