Heart of the Home .
At Lighting of London, we aim to create lighting schemes that support both the architecture and the interior design intent of a space. In this luxury kitchen project, the goal was to introduce a more contemporary lighting layer that contrasted with the traditional character of the surrounding rooms, while still feeling cohesive within the wider home.
THE BRIEF .
This kitchen formed part of a classically designed home, where most spaces featured traditional detailing and refined finishes. The brief for this room was to create something more modern and visually striking, without disrupting the overall architectural balance of the property.
The lighting needed to feel clean and minimal, enhancing the space while respecting the existing ceiling detail and craftsmanship.
Our Approach .
We worked with the natural architecture of the room, using the existing ceiling coving as the basis for the lighting design. This allowed us to avoid introducing additional bulk or visual clutter through surface-mounted or grid-based layouts.
Instead, linear lighting was integrated directly into the coving detail, creating a continuous and discreet line of light. This approach preserved the integrity of the ceiling design while providing a strong, modern lighting effect.
Careful attention was given to the quality of the light source, ensuring an even output with no visible spotting. The result is a clean, uninterrupted line of illumination that complements the kitchen’s finishes and surfaces.
The Products .
We took a step away from the typical grid format of downlights for this space. Instead we relied on the continuous run of light linear strip provides, to emphasise the architectural details of this kitchen, such as the coving and the impressive cabinets and joinery.
To complement the more geometric features the linear strip provided, we chose our Beam.S.Q as an accent uplight. The square finish worked with the more contemporary lighting effect, whilst providing a considered lighting effect, framing the window areas in the space.
Our Impact .
Using our background in lighting design, we knew we could create an atmosphere that would be a striking visual contrast to the traditional elegance of the surrounding rooms on this floor.
One of our key decisions was to work with the natural architecture of the room. The ceiling’s beautiful coving offered a subtle recess that became the perfect home for our lighting.
By integrating linear fixtures into this detail, we avoided the heaviness and visual clutter of a grid format. This choice not only preserved the ceiling’s craftsmanship but also made installation smooth and unobtrusive.
The OUTCOME .
The completed lighting scheme introduces a clean, contemporary layer to a traditionally designed home. The kitchen now feels bright, refined and cohesive, with lighting that enhances both the architecture and the interior finishes.
This project demonstrates how subtle integration and careful product selection can create a strong visual impact without compromising architectural detail.
