Highlighting Heritage .
Situated in the heart of Shropshire lies Weston Park – a significant stately home with over 300 years of history, but where, unfortunately, the existing exterior lighting had reached the end of its life and no longer supported the needs of the building.This heritage building called for a careful focus on respect for the architecture, clarity of function, and careful enhancement of key features.
THE BRIEF .
The original requirement was to replace outdated and failing exterior lighting with a reliable system that would provide effective security illumination.
However, it quickly became clear that the project presented an opportunity to go further, creating a lighting scheme that not only met functional requirements, but also enhanced the architectural presence of the building at night.
The estate is regularly used for weddings and events, so flexibility, control and atmosphere were also key considerations.
Our Approach .
We developed a completely new lighting strategy that balanced security needs with architectural enhancement.
Rather than simply replacing existing floodlighting, the scheme was rethought to highlight the building’s key features. This approach allowed the architecture to be appreciated clearly at night while maintaining a considered level of light.
Different fixture types were used across the estate to respond to specific conditions, ensuring each element of the building was treated appropriately.
A lighting control system was also integrated to allow full scene-setting capability, enabling the estate to adjust the atmosphere depending on use, from day-to-day operation through to formal events.
The Products .
The Spot.Z was used within the Italian garden to highlight focal landscape features, including the fountain, creating depth and interest within the wider grounds. The zoomable feature allows the light output to be adjusted depending on the effect desired, from general lighting, to dramatic pinpoint lighting.
First impressions count and thats where the Spot.M came in. These were installed under the porte-cochère to provide balanced illumination of the entrance areas, improving both visibility and architectural clarity.
Small but mighty, the Spot.S was used to illuminate window bays. Due to its compact size, the Spot.S could be placed close to the building in roder to highlight the façade, especially in the orangery, ensuring subtle definition without overpowering the space.
The Tilt.L was used across the main elevations of the building, delivering broader architectural wash lighting to define the scale and structure of the façade. The tilted light allowed precise aiming, ensuring focal features were highlighted while avoiding unnecessary spill light.
THe Tilt.M was used in conjunction with the Spot.M to create an entryway which left a lasting impression. The Tile.M was used to highlight key architectural elements, including the columns of the porte-cochère, providing controlled accent lighting with precise aiming capability.
For a layered exterior lighting scheme, the Moon was essential for providing a soft, dappled lighting effect, illuminating walkways.The Moon was placed at the guest entrance to the Victorian wing, providing soft, welcoming lighting that supports arrival points without harsh contrast.
Our Impact .
A key part of the project for us was rethinking the brief from a simple like-for-like replacement to a considered architectural lighting strategy, for enhancement and functionality.
By tailoring fixture selection to specific architectural features, we were able to reduce unnecessary light spill while improving both visual impact and functionality. The result is a more efficient and more flexible system that supports the estate’s operational needs.
Being able to provide close coordination with the wider team ensured the installation was practical to deliver while maintaining the integrity of the design.
The OUTCOME .
The completed scheme enhances Weston Park’s architectural presence while also providing reliable and effective exterior lighting. The building is now clearly defined at night, with key features highlighted in a controlled and considered way.
Beyond functionality, the lighting has improved the overall perception of the estate, reinforcing its status as a landmark property and creating a strong visual identity after dark.
This project demonstrates how a thoughtful redesign of existing infrastructure can deliver both practical performance and meaningful architectural enhancement.
