Considering lighting layouts early in a project can save a lot of stress later on. When planning, it’s crucial to ensure that lighting is even and consistent throughout the home.
Recessed Lighting
To achieve uniform lighting, it’s best to start installing recessed lights in the center of the ceiling and then work your way outward, evenly spacing the fixtures from that central point. However, if you need extra light in a specific area of the room, start there and then continue evenly spacing the lights from that point. The general rule for spacing is to divide your ceiling height by two. For example, with an 8-foot high ceiling, lights should be spaced 4 feet apart. Additionally, to avoid shadows, ensure that lights are no closer than 3 feet from any walls and, in kitchens, no closer than 18 to 22 inches from cabinets or fixed furnishings.

Wall Lights
A general guideline for wall lights is to place them above shoulder height and space them evenly. If you plan to use wall lights as the main source of illumination, which is common in hallways and dining rooms, they should be spaced 4 to 6 feet apart and positioned no less than 5 feet off the ground. When installing wall lights along stairs, space them at least three steps apart. In bathrooms, wall lights should be installed about 65 to 70 inches from the floor and positioned on either side of the mirror at head height to provide clear, even lighting and eliminate unattractive shadows. Keep in mind that these measurements are general guidelines and may need to be adjusted for larger rooms or spaces featuring artwork.
ceiling mounted lights
For rooms with ceilings under 8 feet high, opt for flush lighting fixtures instead of hanging pendants, which can feel cramped. If your ceilings are between 8 to 10 feet, explore pendant options while keeping in mind the height they will drop. And for those lucky enough to have ceilings over 10 feet, seize the chance to choose larger fixtures that become dramatic focal points in your space.

Pendant Lighting
When it comes to pendant lighting, versatility is key. Use adjustable chains, cords, or rods to customize heights. Above a dining table, hanging pendants should be positioned 30 to 36 inches overhead to allow for comfortable dining. For activities like playing pool, go for lower lighting around 24 to 32 inches. In kitchens, hang pendants higher, up to 40 inches above surfaces to keep them out of the way while still providing essential light.
chandelier lighting
Chandeliers can serve as stunning statements, especially above dining tables and in hallways. A great guideline is that the chandelier should be at least 12 inches smaller in diameter than your table’s width. In hallways, consider the chandelier’s size compared to the room’s diagonal measurement in feet. Most importantly, ensure that the fixture hangs no lower than 8 feet from the floor to keep the space feeling open and inviting.

The placement of your light fittings can drastically impact the look and feel of your home. Thoughtful planning ensures functional yet aesthetically pleasing lighting throughout your spaces. By considering these aspects early in your project, you can create a welcoming and harmonious environment that highlights your home’s beauty. So go ahead, brighten your world with careful consideration of your lighting design — your future self will thank you!
